Since I wrote about my use of Quicken, I’ve received questions from several readers about other options for personal finance and budgeting. Since I’ve only used Quicken (and for many years), I was hoping some of you could comment on what other programs you’ve used and your likes/dislikes. Do you use Wesabe, Microsoft Money, or something else? If so, would you be willing to share with the other readers what your experience has been? Thanks!

  1. I have been using Moneydance (www.moneydance.com) for several months now, and find that it is excellent. It is simple to use, does everything that I need it to, including accounting for unit trusts, and I have also tweaked it so I can use the envelope zero-based style of budget with it (although it also features the more usual style of budgeting).

The support is good, and new versions are issued regularly, plus updates are free. It’s reasonably priced too.

  2. @Maggie - Thanks so much for the good review of Moneydance. This is excellent information, and exactly the sort of review I was looking for!

  3. I’ll have to check out Moneydance…I hadn’t heard of that one before. I’ve been using a google spreadsheet for my poor man’s budget tracker. The price is right, but it’s a pain to gather everything together every month. I like to remove barriers wherever possible. It’s too easy for me to put it off or just skip a month.

    Thanks for the recommendation!
